Record Details

NHER Number:26791
Type of record:Monument
Name:Fragmented earthwork bank

Summary

A fragmented section of bank, about 700m long, is visible as an earthwork and appears to follow the course of drainage/boundary ditches. It would appear that the banks are in fact traces of modern activity to keep the drainage channels clear, although the clearing process may have gone on for a number of centuries.

Full description

February 2001. NMP.
A fragmented section of bank, about 700m long, is visible as an earthwork running east to west between TF 7500 4421 - TF 7571 4429 on 1945 aerial photographs (S1). The earthwork is only faintly visible, and as with NHER 26788, appears to follow the course of drainage/boundary ditches. The earthworks are also visible on 1950 aerial photographs (S2). It seems that the earthwork banks are in fact spoil heaps, created during ditch clearance. This area is also marked on Faden's 1797 map (S3) as 'Titchwell Marsh drained'. It would appear that the banks are in fact traces of modern activity to keep the drainage channels clear, although the clearing process may have gone on for a number of centuries.
A. Hunt (NMP), 6 February 2001.
