Full description

January-April 1997. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey on proposed route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Field/Location RDX 34.2).
A concentration of 36 Prehistoric flint fragments including a blade, flakes, and retouched flakes were recovered from the vicinity of the southernmost east-west ridge, where undated trackways and linear fetures run to the west of the route. These finds appear to continue the concentrations of worked flint observed in RDX 34.3 (NHER 12828) and RDX 34.4 (NHER 34033) to the south. Together, this records a general flint scatter covering approximately 1250m.
A medieval lead weight, medieval and post medieval ceramic building material, 15 sherds of post medieval pottery, and two post medieval coins were also recovered from this field. The post medieval material was primarily concentrated at the northern end of the field. This portion of the plot was once allotment gardens.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.55 and NWHCM : 2017.395).

November 1998. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Additional field survey on proposed route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Field/Location RDX 34.2; Site 10).
This area was selected for further, more detailed, fieldwalking but cropping regimes prevented access.
See report (S2) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 3 June 2008.

November 1998. Geophysical Survey.
Bacton to Great Yarmouth Gas Pipeline (Site 10 - Area A).
Geophysical Survey along the 30m easement of the proposed pipeline recorded anomalies interpreted as a linear feature and possible associated pits towards the north of the surveyed area.
See report (S3) for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 04 June 2008.

March-May 1999. Excavation.
Excavation on route of Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (Site 10N).
A ditch containing 22 struck flints including 9 retouched pieces and 14 sherds of Mid to Late Bronze Age pottery was excavated in the extreme north-western corner of the site. Several other ditches not shown on aerial photographs ran roughly east-west across the site, which could have been Bronze Age, but no finds were recorded. A curvilinear gully running north-south along the site post-dated two of the east-west ditches and therefore is possibly of late prehistoric date.
A substantial ditch cutting the curvilinear gully contained five sherds of possible Iron Age or late prehistoric pottery. A small hearth consisting of scorched pebbles and flints with fragments of fired clay was recorded during topsoil stripping contained Iron Age pottery and it is possible that this feature also dates to this period.
See publication draft (S4) and assessment report (S5)/(S6) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S7).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.55 and NWHCM : 2017.395).
S. Howard (NLA), 3 February 2010. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 May 2019.
