Name:Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds


Fieldwalking here in 1997 and 1999 recovered sherds of Late Saxon and medieval pottery along with numerous quern fragments and pieces of medieval tile. Pottery types identified included medieval Grimston Ware and Late Saxon St Neots Ware.

Full description

November 1997. Area 40m northeast to southwest by 50m on west edge of field. No obvious soil colour difference visible, but many large flints.
Pottery including fresh sherds:
One base and three body sherds Glazed Grimston.
One bowl rim and three body sherds medieval unglazed.
Many pieces of lava quern; up to thirty noted.
Tabular fragment of pinkish granite, 18mm thick, polished on both faces.
A few medieval roofing tiles.
One fragment medieval unglazed ridge tile.
Many oyster shells.

Winter 1999. Surface finds on stubble.
One shelly body sherd, ?St Neots or medieval.
Medieval unglazed: one jar, one bowl rim and twenty-four body sherds.
Medieval unglazed with white inclusions: one bowl rim with pouring lip and two body sherds.
Glazed Grimston nineteen body sherds.
Fragment of shelly limestone with two flat faces (one with tool marks). Thickness 32mm.
