Record Details

NHER Number:31348
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Site of Early Saxon cemetery and multi-period metal objects and coins

Summary

Metal-detecting in this area between 1994 and 2012 has recovered a variety of objects ranging in date from the Middle Bronze Age to the post medeival period. Finds of note include part of a Middle to Late Bronze Age spearhead, an Iron Age coin, five Roman brooches, a Middle Saxon pin or stylus, part of a Late Saxon stirrup, a medieval strap fitting and a silver vervel belonging to Henry Prince of Wales. The presence of Early Saxon brooches, a shield mount and a hanging bowl escutcheon suggest that there may have been an Early Saxon cemetery at this site.
