Full description

Formerly 'Commerce House'. Late 17th century house with 18th century shop.

April 1975. Listed, Grade II.
18th century shop front consisting of two bay windows with central door, fluted pilasters with consoles to entablature. Upper storey of gault brick with parapet and three sash windows. End chimneystacks. Pentise to right with shaped parapet; flint and brick, 18th century with 19th century shop window. Lean to smokehouse to right with louvre window to loft. Left hand gable of alternate courses of flints then flint and brick.
Interior of shop retains furnishings of about 1800 with rounded recesses separated by columns; drawers etc. Pentise has ships spars as rafters. Rear range is lobby entrance brick house with moulded platband and cornice, central chimneystack and flush sash windows. First floor left room with ducksnest grate bearing Prince of Wales emblem; stairs behind stack and another set in extension to rear with carved balusters and handrail, below octagonal lantern. Known locally as Miss Stars Shop.
