Summary

An H shaped red brick farmhouse, formerly a manor house, dating to about 1650, with alterations and additions in 1722 and in the late 19th century. The house is two storeys high with attics in the north wing and a pantiled roof. The main entrance façade has an off centre two storey porch.

Full description

Former manor house dating to about 1650.
Altered in 1722 and late 19th century. Red brick in an H-shaped plan. Two storeys, with attics in the north wing only. West façade with off centre two storeyed porch flanked by cross wings; moulded string course and inserted string course on porch. Blocked occulus in its gable. Façade windows mainly 19th century but side wing windows retain 17th century pediment, though the mullions are 19th century. South cross wing a late 17th century addition? - rebuilt stepped gable and stone 1722 'SYIA' for Jacob Astley of Melton Constable, with 17th century pediment. North cross wing has inserted garage doors under 17th century pediments; windows here also have these. Curved gable. Interior mostly 19th century. Ogee stopped and ovolo moulded beams (sounds nearer 1600; E. Rose NAU). 17th century roof with windbraces at north end. Early 18th century doors. Information from (S1).
