Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman building, Early Saxon cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal-detecting between 1994 and 2014 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a Mesolithic blade; Roman pottery sherds, roof tile, flue tile and brick fragments; Roman window glass fragments; Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins and undated and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an undated lead weight, casting waste and metalworking debris; Roman furniture fittings, bracelet fragments, needles, a ring key, awl, gold finger ring, hair pin, copper alloy ring, handle from a patera or skillet, cosmetic pestle, cosmetic mortar, mounts, buckles and brooches, including a plate brooch; Early Saxon brooches, wrist clasps, a gold finger ring and a very small buckle; Early/Middle Saxon buckles and a sword pommel clasp; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; a Late Saxon finger ring or ear ring and strap-end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories and medieval brooches, finger rings and a harness pendant.
The quantity and type of finds recovered suggests that this is the site of a Roman building and an Early Saxon cemetery.
