Summary

Metal detecting between 1993 and 1998 recovered a range of objects, including an Iron Age coin, a Roman brooch, a Saxon wrist clasp, strap end, brooch, coins and buckle, medieval buckles and the base of a post medieval glass vessel stamped with an heraldic motif.

Full description

1993. Metal detecting.
1. Middle Saxon strap end, lovely engraved decoration. Animal head terminal, panel in centre with linear decoration. Very unusual, divided in two by a vertical line, with a tiny Trewhiddle animal on each side.
2. 13th century gilt bronze buckle, D-shaped and plate decoration with tiny punched annulets within triangles.
3. 13th century gilt bronze buckle plate and cast relief lion and rocker arm ornament.
4. 17th century stud, rosette cast head and pellets.

1994. Metal detecting.
Nine buckles:
1. 13th century with moulded ends to pin rest, and to pin bar.
2. medieval rectangular with six spherical bosses and grooved pin rest.
3. medieval rectangular with grooved pin rest, and groove in outer edge of frame.
4. medieval circular with rectangular attachment loop. Pin with moulded collar, looped over narrow bar.
5. Early post medieval baluster moulded frame.
6. Early post medieval with projecting lobes on frame.
7. Early post medieval rosettes on pin rest.
8. Early post medieval lobes.
9. Early post medieval buckle.

Roman plate brooch, British, about 125 to 200/225? Identified by D. Macreth.
13th century gilded bronze buckle, pin bar broken, a rounded outer frame with AMOR.
Lead disc, thick, with slightly incised markings on both faces, eight radiating lines with five divisions on outside edge between each arm. A trial for a sundial?

9th century disc brooch with backward turning animal decoration with ring-and-dot billeted border. Pierced lug on reverse and broken catchplate, (S2).

January/February 1995. Metal detecting.
12th/13th century bronze 'ring' from double ring-swivel from dog's leash. Central pierced hole flanked by animal heads.
?Medieval or earlier solid bronze knife handle with animal head terminal slightly curved. Iron where tang slotted in.

1995. Metal detecting.
Early Saxon gilded wrist clasp fragment with face-mask in central panel and circular boss with white ?shell inlay and chip-carved animal ornament on side panel. Heart-shaped pierced lobe above face-mask for attachment and two openings in side panel possible also for attachment, (S3).
Late Saxon buckle, D-shaped, decorated on top edge, and outside edge with dot-in-circle, (S4).

Post medieval base of 17th century vessel stamped with an heraldic motif of a shield within which are three four-petalled flowers with raised centres. (S1).
