Name:Medieval monastic cell


The remains of a small medieval building were excavated in 1935. Medieval floor tiles and fragments of pottery were found during the excavation. The building was a Cluniac cell, probably for one monk. The cell was founded during the reign of Henry I, and had been destroyed by the early 15th century.

Full description

Foundations of buttressed structure floored with tiles.
The compartments each 1.8m x 0.91m (6 feet x 3 feet), hole through stone south side. Pink mortar.
Possible alien cell.
Green glazed and unglazed pottery (Found outside with charcoal. E. Rose (NAU)).
Excavated by Mr Simpson, see (S1).

April 1935.
Deep ploughing struck masonry, internal and external sides cemented 'outlet' is horizontal hole 3.8cm diameter (1.5 inches) through piece of stone 61cm to 91cm (2 feet to 3 feet) below surface.
Alien Cell.
Cluniac founded in the reign of Henry I for probably 1 monk.
Destroyed in about 1414.
