Record Details

NHER Number:29412
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Late Neolithic/Bronze Age flint working site and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1992 and metal-detecting between 2014 and 2019 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a large number of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age flakes, scrapers and blades and Mesolithic blades and a core; Beaker, Iron Age and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman and medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include medieval buckles, medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments and a mount and a post-medieval coin weight and belt fastener. The large number of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age flints present suggests that this may have been a lithic working or occupation site.

Full description

November 1992-January 1993. Systematic Fieldwalking Survey.
Evaluation on proposed route of Hardwick Landfill site access road (Field 9):
A few small flint blades and a small core of probable Mesolithic date.
Many flints of probable Late Neolithic/Bronze Age date. Mostly flakes but also scrapers and blades.
1 Beaker pottery sherd.
Small number of Iron Age pottery sherds.
1 medieval coin.
Post-medieval pottery sherds.
The flints were concentrated down the hill slope, nearly coinciding with the thin scatter of prehistoric sherds. This site may represent an area of flint working, possibly even an occupation area.
