Name:Middle Bronze Age palstave hoard

Summary

During 1993-94 a number of artefacts were recovered from the ground surface in this area. Finds included three Middle Bronze Age palstaves of varying quality, prehistoric flint pot boilers and sherds of Middle Saxon and medieval pottery. The palstaves may form part of a hoard.

Full description

January 1993. Set aside land.
Context 1: general scatter. At grid reference, rim sherd pimply Ipswich ware, fresh piece.
Context 2 at [1]. Metal detector find.
Pot boilers with very dark soil on edge of low lying ground, about 12m east-west and about 10m north-south. At depth of 22.9cm (9in) within concentration, battered and damaged midribbed palstave with adherent calcined flint and charcoal. To be photographed. Drawing (S1) in file.

No concentration of finds in area around findspot of Ipswich ware.
Two sherds of medieval unglazed pottery from area, well-weathered partly visible surface.
Pot boilers are dense and in dark soil, probably extending beyond south boundary into grass 'meadow' which is set lower than arable.
Palstave findspot plotted. 52m east from road, 9m north from south edge of field, (S1).
Pot boilers 25m east-to-west, min. 21m north-to-south. Plan in file.

Cutting edge/part of blade of another ribbed palstave (S2).
Finder cleaned off corrosion including charcoal, some retained (possibly for C14 dating at British Museum). Found within 2.7m (9ft) of previous find.

Radiocarbon date 2865 in file.

July/August 1994. Found close to previous find (Context 2).
Adherent charcoal removed by finder before object seen by NCM staff. Blade of palstave in poor and corroded condition. Drawing in file.
