Summary

Metal detecting in 1990 recovered a beautiful example of a 14th century gilt copper alloy sword belt chape. Further detecting in 1993 recovered a Roman brooch. An Iron Age coin, a Roman pottery sherd, a Roman coin and a middle saxon coin were recovered in 2008.

Full description

1990. Metal detecting. Location [2].
Beautiful example of 14th century gilt bronze sword belt chape with a pierced terminal by which it was fastened to the mount on the sword scabbard. Made in two pieces, deep upper plate and thin back plate.
The letter 'M' is inscribed on the square plate, on a cross-hatched background (5mm thick).
The square 'plate' is hollow, with two rivets at open end to secure the belt. The 'M' has terminal leaf-motifs, within a double-contoured border. Groups of three incised lines on each corner edge.
Below, an integral lozenge-shaped plate (11mm thick) decorated with rosette. Cast animal-head terminal with pierced hole in jaws. Fine detail on ears and muzzle of animal.
