Summary

In 1852 a Bronze Age a copper alloy sword was dug up in Sedge fen. The sword was leaf-shaped and survived in fine condition with only the hilt plate broken off.

Full description

1852. Dug up from Sedge Fen, 1.8m (6ft) below surface of moor.
Leaf-shaped bronze sword, in fine condition but top of hilt plate broken off. Present length 51cm (20.2in), width of blade increases from 2.8cm (1.1in) at narrowest point to 4.1cm (1.6in) at bulge. Blade has a median rib, the leaf-shaped curve is very pronounced. No notch at junction of blade and butt, shoulders sloping and slightly convex. The bronze is only slightly patinated and over most of sword retains its original colour. Probably early in Late Bronze Age.
Held by Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography.
