A map of 1733 at Wolterton Hall shows houses arranged around a green immediately north of the church. This shows that village was here rather than on the site of the hall. Wolterton village was mentioned in Domesday and the Nomina Villarum. It had ten taxpayers in 1329, 17 in 1332, and 37 in 1377.
