Name:Site of Roman settlement and saltern

Summary

Fieldwalking has recovered fragments of Roman pottery and tile, suggesting that this is the site of a Roman settlement, one of a number of similar settlements that have been identified along the course of the Fen Causeway Roman road (NHER 2796). Briquetage has also been recovered from the site, suggesting that salt-making was carried out here in the Roman period.

Full description

Concentration of Roman pottery set in dark soil.
Pot (moderate), fired clay (abundant), tile (?x1), bone (x1). Conditions reasonable - newly drilled cereal, some weathering. Dimensions about 59m southwest/northeast x 48m northwest/southeast.

(S2) records this as the site of a Roman settlement dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries, one of a number of similar sites identified along the course of the Fen Causeway Roman road (NHER 2796). (S2) also records briquetage from this site, suggesting that salt-production was taking place at this site during the Roman period.
