Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1986 recovered sherds of Late Saxon and medieval pottery. In addition a number of animal bones and shell fragments were also retrieved from the same area.

Full description

17 March 1986. Fieldwalking, well weathered ploughsoil and young cereal.
Context 1: general scatter odd medieval sherds. Also includes one Thetford ware. Site TYS BP.
Context 2: at [1]. On silt ridge and only a couple of sherds between this and NHER number 19105/Context 7.
Concentration Late Saxon pottery sparse to moderate, moderate bone, sparse shell. No post medieval. Area 48m northwest-southeastx 45m northeast-southwest at 3.1m OD. Site TYS 45.
Context 3: at [2]. On silt ridge. Concentration of Late Saxon pottery, sparse to moderate, ditto bone, very very sparse shell. One metal object. No post medieval. Area min 61m northwest-southeast x 36m northeast-southwest at 3.1m OD. Site TYS 46.
Context 4: at [3]. On edge of silt ridge and into dyke beside it. Concentration moderate medieval pottery, sparse bone, moderate to abundant shell. Post medieval material sparse to moderate. Includes one Stamford sherd. Area 74m northwest-southeast x 46m at 2.4-3.0m OD. Site TYS 47.
Context 5: at [4]. On edge of drove. Concentration moderate medieval pottery, sparse bone, shell sparse to moderate. Post medieval material also sparse. Includes four Late Saxon sherds. 45m northwest-southeast x 48m at 2.5m OD. Site TYS 48.
