NHER Number:21872
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of Early Saxon inhumation cemetery, Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Extensive fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1983 and 2015 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including Mesolithic and Mesolithic/Neolithic blades and a collection of burnt flint; undated, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman and post-medieval brick and tile fragments; undated briquetage and fragments of quern stone; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token and undated and Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated casting waste, metalworking debris, nails, a harness ring and strike-a-lights; Bronze Age axeheads; an Iron Age brooch; Roman harness fittings, nail cleaners, an amphora-shaped strap-end, brooch, copper alloy needle, plumb bob, skillet and steelyard weight; Early Saxon brooches, personal ornaments, a button and a sleeve clasp; a Middle Saxon pin and personal ornament; a Late Saxon bell and unusual mount; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval ampulla, book fitting, furniture fittings, rowel spur, horse harness pendant and a key and post-medieval bells, a cloth seal, coin weight, musket ball, spoon, harness mount, weights and knife fragments.
The number of Early Saxon brooches, pottery sherds and other metal finds of this date suggest that this is the site of an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery and the number and type of Roman finds suggests that there might have been a Roman building or settlement on the site.
