Full description
Medieval moated site within which lies a timber-framed house or probable early 17th-century date (Rose Farm, now recorded seperately as NHER 64450).
Pre 30 September 1985. Field Observation.
Discovered by A. Rogerson (NAU).
To the north-west of Rose Farm is a pond, from which a wet ditch (not on OS, but clearly old) runs west then turns south through a second pond, and returning east where it is cut by the driveway. Another pond east of the drive was noted as having been dyked out, revealing that the south edge was cut into natural, but the north edge was formed of built-up material, showing that a wide
ditch had formerly been present; the edge of the return of the vanished east arm could also be seen in section. The house therefore sits in a medmum-sized moated site; the position of Meadow Cottage (NHER 21743) said to be 16th century, just outside the eastern arm, is interesting.

Site visit:
Moat ditches vary from large and pond like feature to east, a narrow ditch surviving north from here, with a wider moat like ditch northwest to west ditch ends in a grassed area lower than the surrounding lawn. Pond to east has been revelted and terraced. Banks have been planted with garden flowers and low shrubs in some areas. Moat dredged three years ago.
