Name:Early Saxon cruciform brooch, medieval pottery sherds


Fieldwalking in 1985 by the Fenland Survey recovered a few medieval pottery sherds from across this field. Metal detecting in 1993 recovered the upper part of an Early Saxon Group florid cruciform brooch.

Full description

27 March 1985. Fieldwalking, weathered soil under winter cereal.
Context 1: odd medieval sherds. WPP FF (S1).

1993. Found with metal detecting [1]. Context 2.
Upper part, including part of bow, of Early Saxon Group V florid cruciform brooch with integrally cast side knobs. Top-knob with trace of solder and of applied silver sheet. Large cast grooved 'X' in centre of headplate. Punched annulets. Multi-grooved bow. Double pin-lug with hint of iron spring-bar. Very abraded, battered and distorted, with oldish breaks. Some gilding survives in grooves. (S3).
