Name:Site of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age occupation and Iron Age settlement

Summary

Fieldwalking on this site has recovered a number of prehistoric flints, including a Neolithic flaked axehead. A fragment of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age pottery has also been found, suggesting that this site was occupied during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. This was also the site of a settlement during the Early Iron Age, and a concentration of Iron Age pottery has been found, as well as fragments of Roman and medieval pottery.

Full description

25 December 1984. Fieldwalking.
On surface of ploughed field on land sloping down to the Blackwater tributary of the River Wissey. Sandy, gravelly soil. Context 4 at TL 8476 0028.
Butt end of broken flaked flint axe, thermally fractured; also 5 flakes.
Found and identified by J.J. Wymer (NAU).
Finds were deposited with the Norfolk Museums Service (NWHCM: 1985.195).

Context 1 (centred TL 8465 0010):
Roman pottery (10 or less).
Medieval pottery (10 or less).
Context 2 (centred TL 8470 0015):
Worked flints including a high number of scrapers.
A single sherd of Late Neolithifc to Early Bonze Age pottery.
39 sherds of Early? Iron Age pottery. All undecorated, mostly gritty but some of sandy fabric.
Context 3 (centred TL 8475 9960):
Worked flint (10 or less).
Medieval pottery (10 or less)
