Name:Saxon and medieval pottery sherds and finds

Summary

Fenland fieldwalking here in 1983 recovered sherds of Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery along with pieces of bone and shell. Subsequently, in 1990, a Late Saxon cast bronze foot and a Saxon or medieval spindle whorl were found in the same area.

Full description

24 February 1983.
Context 1.
Odds and ends of medieval pottery also one Middle Saxon, four Late Saxon, in field containing:

Context 2 at [2]. 40m x 30m 3.7m (12ft) OD.
Sparse scatter medieval pottery on main roddon, on top and especially on west side. Also two Middle Saxon and several Late Saxon - archive.
Some bone and shell.
Little soil discolouration.

Context 3 at [3].
Largeish scatter of medieval pottery on small roddon joining main roddon but not spreading onto top of latter. Includes several Late Saxon sherds. Two spreads of grey soil containing bone, shell and pottery. These areas are separate but overall the pottery covers an irregular area of approximately 60m west-to-east x 50m north-to-south at 10' OD.
Identifications by R. Silvester (NAU) March 1983.

Some of the material found by R. Silvester (NAU) has been reidentified as Roman pottery.

Late Saxon cast bronze foot of vessel in form of animal head.

Spindle whorl, stone, probably fine grained limestone. Middle Saxon, Late Saxon or medieval.
