Record Details

NHER Number:16732
Type of record:Monument
Name:Cropmarks of prehistoric ring ditches and possible Roman field boundaries

Summary

Aerial photography from 1996 recorded a set of multiple cropmarks in this area. This includes one relatively large ring ditch and one small ring ditch, and a third ring ditch with a causeway to the east. These are similar to the hengelets known elsewhere in East Anglia, and are likely to be prehistoric. A relatively small, almost square enclosure is also visible, truncated by a field boundary, and these are thought to be the traces of a field system, possibly of Roman date.

Full description

30 July 1977. Cropmarks.
Half a rectangular enclosure (cut by field boundary to south-east) and linear markings.
First noted by J. Bown (NAU).
E. Rose (NAU), 14 November 1980.

18 July 1996. NLA aerial photography. Multiple cropmarks visible.
One relatively large ring ditch and one small ring ditch.
To the southwest is a fat ditched ring ditch with a causeway to the east, similar to the hengelets known elsewhere in East Anglia. These features are likely to be prehistoric, although they have a regularity that may suggest a more recent date. Note proximity to Coltishall. A relatively small, almost square enclosure is truncated by a field boundary. These are the traces of a field system, possibly of Roman date. Note also, possible ditch on edge of paleaochannel, possibly following the meander.
M. Brennand (NLA), 3 December 2001.
