Various discoveries in old O.S field 635 (Curtis Field 43).

1951. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis at TL 6875 8866:
1 grooved sandstone block. A fragment of very fine-grained sandstone or quartzite with single narrow slit. Upper faces (naturally?) smooth, edges rougher, groove worn smooth. Information from (S1). Illustrated in (S1) (Fig. 56 L116) and listed as now part of the Secker Collection.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 November 2013.

1955. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis:
1 Neolithic triangular flint arrowhead.
Information from (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 17 November 2013.

1948-1957. Stray Finds.
Curtis' catalogue lists a number of additional finds that were also found in this field (F35), but for which little additional information is given. The worked flints listed in (S1) are as follows:
1 Mesolithic microlith (Coll. No. 5). Found at TL 6873 8858. Described in (S2).
5 Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads.
1 Neolithic transverse arrowhead.
3 'harpoon barbs' - presumably Neolithic petit tranchet derivative transverse arrowheads.
3 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowheads. Found between 1950 and 1957.
1 'slug knife' - almost certainly a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knife.
1 'halbard head'.
2 borers.
1 'saw'.
11 other implements.
Also a prehistoric macehead found at TL 6892 8852. Petrology No. 172. Group XX.
E. Rose (NAU) 10 April 1979. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 17 November 2013.

13 December 1985. Weathered ploughsoil, ploughed chalk loam. [1].
Context 1, general scatter in east and south parts field.
Odd sherds pottery, some probably Iron Age.
Individual findspots of sherds plotted on Fenland overlay by eye only.
Some flints (no concentrations) not retained.
Rest of pottery later identified as Roman.
For full details of wares, flint types, etc., see (S3).
R. Silvester (NAU) 14 December 1985.
