Name:Medieval and post medieval pottery finds

Summary

Fragments of medieval and post medieval pottery were found on the bed of a dried out pond in 1978. Metal-detecting in 2018 recovered medieval coins and a post-medieval token, as well as a medieval ring, buckle, and knife end-cap; and a medieval/post-medieval decorated wheel pommel from a sword and a scabbard chape.

Full description

Autumn 1978. [1].
By side of, and from bed of dry pond (marked on tithe map). Late Saxon rim sherds, medieval sherds including four rims 13th/14th century, late medieval/ Transitional wares, 15th/16th century with one overfired glazed sherd, and 17th century sherd of lead-glazed earthenware.

January 1979.
The Late Saxon sherds now reidentified as medieval.

July-September 2018. Metal-detecting. Site extended to the whole field. [2].

September-October 2018. Metal-detecting. [3].
Medieval ring, buckle, and knife end-cap.
Medieval/post-medieval scabbard chape and a wheel pommel from a sword. The pommel is decorated with a cross paty with possible enamel. The cross paty is associated with the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller military orders (S1).
1 post-medieval token.
