Summary
A 16th century brick house with crowstepped gables, diapered brickwork and a two-storey stair tower. The house may originally have been a rectory, and had been extended and divided into two dwellings by the mid 18th century. Unusually the house had a first floor corridor linking the stair tower to the first floor chambers. It is unclear whether the corridor is an original feature or whether it is a later insertion. A late 18th century ritual deposit of clothes and shoes has been found near the chimney stack in the hall and three medieval floor tiles were found during building work. An 18th century square game larder stands close to the house.

Full description
Timber framed house, with original gable walls and stair turret in brick, 16th century. Whether frame is older is not at present apparent. North fireplaces elaborate with ruddling and moulding at first floor. Building extended beyond north stack in 17th century. Side walls replaced in brick 18th or 19th century.

Northern part of building now renamed Pelican House.
More detailed examination of southern section now indicates that side walls are not a later replacement and there is little evidence for a timber frame. More probable that this is a brick house of end-stack plan, but unusually with a stair turret, of around 1600. Also unusual is a first floor corridor, apparently original but not respected by the ceiling beams. Later 17th century north extension as stated above. Towards south end of building is an inserted stack of about 1800 reusing a bressumer of about 1600 carved with apotropaic symbols; beside this was discovered a spirit-trap hoard of shoes, clothes, etc. dated also to about 1800, a remarkably late example of this custom.

(S3) notes that the house was a rectory in the possession of the Prior of Pentney before the Dissolution. (S3) interprets the first floor corridor as an insertion, added soon after the house was built. However, (S4) interprets the first floor corridor as an original feature.
