Name:Hedenham Hall

Summary

A 16th century red brick country house with later additions and alterations. The building was originally E-shaped in plan, the façade having five window bays plus two more on the cross wings at either end. The central doorway has fluted columns supporting a decorated frieze. The house was refaced and the interior refitted in the early 18th century. There are good interior features, including a fine staircase of about 1740. Other buildings in the five acre grounds include a 17th century coach house/stable, dog kennels of 1678 and a 17th century walled garden, altered in 1908.

Full description

Heraldic evidence dates this to before 1576 and the style suggests mid 16th century. Separate kitchen block contemporary or early 17th. Service wing of 1678 later reclad. Dog kennels 1678 and coach house 1697. Important refacing and interior of about 1730 with painting of house 1735 within. Under partial restoration 1985.

The coach house/stable is more probably 1597 than 1697 and has a timber frame. The 17th century walled garden was altered in 1908. Well discovered in service court and unconfirmed report of a Roman coin found there.
