Record Details

NHER Number:9586
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of probable Late Neolithic to Bronze Age round barrow

Summary

A ring ditch, possibly with a double concentric plan and probably representing the site of a Late Neolithic to Bronze Age round barrow, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It is one of several such barrows visible in the immediate vicinity of Arminghall Henge (NHER 6100), which appears to have acted as a focus for prehistoric funerary monuments.

The ring ditch described above is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S6) and (S8)-(S21), centred at TG 2393 0613. It is described above as being double concentric in plan, but only the broad inner ditch is clearly visible on the consulted aerial photographs, the potential outer ditch (or ditches) being rather faint, intermittent and dubious. The inner ditch, which is circular, measures 24m in diameter; the postulated outer ditch (as mapped by the NMP) is more oval in plan and measures up to 39m in diameter.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 30 June 2010.
