July 2007. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The entire area of the site was at a lower level than surrounding areas, probably as a result of quarrying associated with the former brickworks nearby (NHER 12491), and possibly also to levelling of the area after the abandonment of the brickworks.
In some areas, large-scale disturbances, presumably associated with brickmaking, were recorded. These may represent quarrying for sand or clay. Infilling these areas of probable extraction were deposits of make-up material including redeposited material, rubble and other debris.
Part of a brick and flint structure was recorded in one of the trenches. It appeared to have been built upon significant dumps of brick, tile, bottles and pottery and was of later post medieval date. The structure was unburnt, and was not thought to have been part of the brickmaking kiln which is known to have existed at this site. It was probably a workshop or small dwelling related to the works there, and was probably one of the buildings that appears on aerial photographs of the site.
Pottery and glass bottles of post medieval date were found in several of the trenches. They may relate to occupation on the site or perhaps were dumped there during the make-up of ground after quarrying ceased in this location.
Bricks and tiles were recovered from many of the trenches. The uniformity of the fabrics of each of these groups suggested that one or another of them may have been made at the site. Some of these were overfired.
