Record Details

NHER Number:32821
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible Early Saxon inhumation cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

In 1988/1989 a small Neolithic part-polished flint axehead was found in this field. Metal-detecting between 1996 and 2006 and a systematic survey of part of the field in 2013/2014 recovered a range of finds including Mesolithic/Early Neolithic, Early Neolithic and Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints; medieval and medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds; single fragments of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe and ridge tile and a number of metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman hairpin; several Early Saxon brooches and a wrist clasp and a Late Saxon strap end.
The nature and quantity of the Early Saxon finds suggest that is potentially the site of an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery.
