Summary

The site of a 19th century tannery with a later steam engine house of 1876. It closed down in 1883. The buildings were gutted by fire and partly demolished in 1960, then finally knocked down in 1999.

Full description

Tannery.
Detailed publication in (S1). Tannery in area referred to in 1630 but not known if on this site. Present buildings date from 1836 at least, run by Leamon family who came to village in 1780s. Closed down in 1883.
Buildings gutted by fire and part demolished 1960. Steam engine house built in 1876.

This site is noted in several directories including White's (S2) and Kelly's (S3) from 1836 to 1883. There is another tanner close by who stayed in business until 1904 called S. Leeds.
