Full description
Spring 1743. Hoard of Late Bronze Age implements found in grounds of Hackford Hall in digging marl pit (National Grid Reference of Hackford Hall is TG 078 222). (S1) illustrates one axe, (S2), (S3), (S4), hoard 51, (S5) cites (S4) wrongly, (S6), (S7), (S8) refer to an axe from Reepham in Cambridge (Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography); photograph in NCM of 83.143 from Webb Collection. 1856, PB99: 'wide oblong aperture, loop broken
decorated with three ribs on each face'; Welsh type (Fox); Length 77mm. ?Any evidence that this is from this hoard. (S9) 'At Royal Society some fine brass celts lately found in Norfolk with spearheads of the form I call received'. (reference not checked; information in Royal Society Records).
Sketch said on previous card to be in W M Arderon (FRS) drawings in NCM (65.95) but not found there in 1920. Possibly in Arderon's 1745-60, British Museum manuscript addition 27966 (Dawson Turner f.148); extract giving account in NCM file, 1920. Best account in Tom Martin, Norfolk Church Collections (NRO Rye MS 17, vol.ii 178-80), with drawings of one axe: extract and copy in NCM file, 1920. R. R. Clarke (NCM).
T. Martin found 'urn fragments and calcined stones in a pit one foot deep on edge of clay pit'. Bryant says found in 1747, thirty one celts in deep clay near site of old Kerdiston Manor (but he could be wrong). Bryant also says: 1742 celt found in marl pit in Hackford Hall grounds 1747; thirty one celts found in deep clay in Kerdiston.
