Summary

Metal-detecting in 1993 and 2023 recovered Late Upper Palaeolithic, Upper Palaeolithic to Early Neolithic, Early Neolithic flake and Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints; medieval pottery sherds; undatable copper alloy casting waste; Late Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval tokens and jettons and a range of other, undated and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman brooch and openwork pendant; an Early Saxon gusset plate; a Middle Saxon/Late Saxon hooked tag; a Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval unusual mount, possible casket mount or binding strip, lead pot mends and lead seal matrix; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments and lead weight and post-medieval crotal bells, harness mounts, a book fitting, spur fragment, coin weight and lead weight.

Full description

1993. Metal-detecting. [1].
1 Late Upper Palaeolithic large blade-like flint flake. 148mm long. Probably from an early stage of core preparation. The edges are battered, suggesting this is an example of a 'mashed' or 'bruised' blade. See drawing (S1). This find is listed as a Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade in (S2).
1 prehistoric blade. Smaller, non-cortical blade. Possibly also Upper Palaeolithic, although it could be of a later, Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date.
1 Late Saxon lozenge stirrup strap mount with flange at base, and pieced lobe at 'apex'. Two rivet holes (large) at base. The body of the mount has nine pierced holes of similar size. Lobes on two corners. See Polaroid (S3).
Flints identified by identified by P. Robins (NCM) and metal object by S. Margeson (NCM). See descriptions in file. These discoveries were reported in (S4).
The Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount was originally recorded as a box mount but reidentified by D. Williams in 1997 - see (S6).

1 medieval pottery sherd, buckles, a strap end, strap loop, very unusual mount (S5), ?casket mount or binding strip, lead seal matrix and lead pot mend.
2 post-medieval coins, 2 tokens, buckles, buttons and a harness mount.
