Record Details

NHER Number:294
Type of record:Monument
Name:City wall, medieval lime kilns, 19th century ovens, Nos 260-272 King Street (Cinder Oven Rows)

Summary

In 1975 and 1976 work to clear an area immediately outside the city wall recorded a section of the associated bank and ditch. It was also noted that almost the whole site was covered to a depth of up to 1m with black ash and cinders containing 19th century material. There are also a considerable number of chalk-filled pits on the site, and these may be linked to documentary references to lime-working in this area in the 14th century.
