Full description

Burnham was a substantial and important settlement during the Middle Saxon period. The amount of Middle Saxon pottery, and high quality Continental metalwork recovered from this site, and others in the immediate vicinity, suggest that Burnham may have been an important market or 'wic'. This area may have been the original focus of settlement in the area, with the present settlement of Burnham Market developing from the Late Saxon period.

Scatter of Roman sherds including Spanish globular amphora and South Midlands shell gritted, range 2nd to 4th century.
Also small Early Saxon rim sherd with 2 tiny cross in circle stamps.

July 2002 – January 2003. Environmental Survey.
A palaeoenvironmental investigation of this area was conducted comprising an initial walkover survey to compare ordnance survey map contours with the topography of the land to look for possible harbour sites and help determine whether this site had been an ‘emporium’ in the Saxon period. An auger survey was conducted to characterise the sediments of the side valley of the River Burn and to provide biological details as well as radiocarbon dates. The study indicated that the River Burn was previously navigable and the ‘emporium’ would have been the nearest defensible landing place that did not require the marshland of the flood plain to be traversed during loading/unloading of boats. It is possible that some type of mooring, like a jetty or wharf, could have been employed rather then operating from the beach. The study suggests that if a port facility were employed at this location it might comprise wooden piles or posts and would lie under the slope wash in the south of the study area. A radiocarbon date from shell yielded an Early Saxon date (AD 450 – 645) and two other carbon dates taken from peat and wood were between the medieval and early post-medieval periods.
