Summary
The cropmarks of possible Roman marching camp have been noted in this area. Aerial photography has confirmed the presence of two parallel ditches with a right-angled corner at the southeast of the possible enclosure defined by the ditches. Subsequent metal detecting and fieldwalking here in 1983 and 1985 recovered Roman, medieval and post medieval pottery sherds along with four worn Roman coins.

Full description
August 1978.
Cropmarks of possible Roman marching camp noted in the vicinity of Norwich Airport by informant on landing at the airfield.
Site not recorded photographically due to volume of air traffic and marks not seen on subsequent occasions.
12 July 1980 and 6 August 1980. NAU aerial photography, flight 93.
Cropmarks of two parallel ditches describing a right-angled, radiused, corner being southeast corner of possible enclosure recorded.
Interpretation as being of possible military origin on basis of radiused corner and identification of location by feature seen by above informant confirmed.
Site located in terms of NGR but not plotted on overlays due to lack of reference points within photography/on existing map cover.

March 1983. Context 1. Against east hedge, area about 100m north-to-south and 50m east-to-west.
Area of finds lies within the line of the ditched enclosure (Roman marching camp?) NHER 16451. Found while metal detecting.
One unglazed Roman/medieval sherd, medieval green glazed handle sherd.
Post medieval stoneware sherd.
Four worn Roman coins: unidentified As, dupondius of Trajan, Sestertius of Antoninus Pius, ?Antonine sestertius. All reverses illegible.

The cropmarks of the camp described above are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5), as a right-angled ditch centred on TG 2336 1375. They have been mapped as accurately as possible given the limitations of the available photographic sources.
