Record Details

NHER Number:153
Type of record:Monument
Name:104-106, St Benedict's Street

Summary

In 1971 excavations here revealed that a phase of late 11th century extraction was followed by the laying out of property boundaries. In the 12th century the site formed part of a single large holding, possibly the rectory. Thereafter the holding was increasingly subdivided into regular tenements. This site history was deduced from the remains of two 11th or 12th century buildings associated with Thetford and early medieval ware sherds. One of these, with cob walls, was the 1160 parsonage house. These were replaced by single medieval building with two wells.
