Record Details

NHER Number:10722
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of medieval Manor House

Summary

A 1937 source refers to a medieval manor with chapel and outbuildings in Toft Monks. The exact site of this building is unclear, but it may be moated site (NHER 10707), though the moated site of the present Hall (NHER 10708) may also have been the site. The Hall is referred to as a 'manor house' in a source of 1646, supporting this idea.

Full description

Description in (S1) (copy in file) - refers to chapel, outbuildings etc.
Moated site at NHER 10707 is a good contender for the site from its size, but the moated site of the present hall is also a strong possibility (NHER 10708). Informant [1] has the tithe map and says this gives no indication.

Terrier dated 1646 penes King's College Cambridge refers to 'manor house new builded' with details suggesting it refers to present Hall (NHER 10708). Does this indicate it is also the site of the medieval manor house?
Informant [2] who has copy.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 2 January 1985.
