Name:Possible medieval moat

Summary

This is the site of a possible medieval moat, shown as a pond on an Ordnance Survey map. A watching brief carried out by the Norfolk Archaeological Unit in 2000 revealed medieval or post medieval ditches which may have been associated with the possible moat. Medieval pottery and post medieval brick has been found on the site.

Full description

Pond on (S1) resembling portion of a moat

Site visited E. Rose (NAU) 1 February 1978.
Totally ploughed out, no trace.

Site seen by B. Cushion on (S2) and visited, a slight depression seen.
Infill of recent building material and lighter soil.
B. Cushion noted some 'medieval fragments.' also in fill, but only brought in what he found on surface just to southeast which were 7 medieval coarse sherds, 2 medieval glazed sherds.
Identified A. Rogerson (NAU); material donated.

Recorded ditches and other features of possible medieval or later date.
