Full description

December 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of a possible World War Two gun emplacement and a group of pits or craters are visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2). At TG 0993 4222 is a roughly 4.5m square sunken area, with a curvilinear bank, 2m wide, to the east. It seems likely that this is a gun emplacement created as part of training exercises up on the heath. To the north of this is a group of circular depressions centred on TG 0991 4226. These vary in size from 3-4.5m across. It is possible due to their circularity that these are bomb or firing craters. It is not clear whether these are the results of enemy fire, although given the amount of training gun emplacements on the heath; it is more likely that they are training related. Five other large roughly circular pits are visible, forming an approximate line from TG 0991 4234 to TG 0998 4220. The largest of these is centred on TG 0996 4223 and measures 6m across.
S. Massey (NMP), 8 December 2003.
