Full description

April 2004. Norfolk NMP
This site includes cropmarks previously recorded as NHER 12820 and 8258.
Cropmarks of undated, Iron Age to Roman and post-medieval date including ditches, enclosures, field boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs (S1-7). A ditched trackway extends for 100m between TG39362597 and TG39422590 (S1-2). It appears to continue the alignment of a trackway associated with a Roman coaxial field system further to the northwest (NHER 38576). Isolated ditches of field boundaries on a northeast - southwest and northwest - southeast alignment further to the west (e.g. at TG39192600) probably also belong to this field system (S2, S4-5). Incomplete curvilinear and rectilinear enclosures separated by trackways at TG39242590 probably relate to a different phase of Iron Age to Roman activity (S2-3). These features are crossed by a medieval to post-medieval road (NHER 38567). A rectilinear enclosure and trackway at TG39002600 are probably also of Iron Age to Roman date (S5, S8).
A regular pattern of north - south and east -west aligned field boundaries are present to the east of Ingham church around TG39242601 (S2). These boundaries appear to cross enclosures probably relating to the medieval manor (NHER 8258) and are likely to be of post-medieval date. Further field boundaries of probable post-medieval date are located at TG39172580 and TG38872590 (S4-5). Other ditch cropmarks within this site are of unknown date (S1-8).
