Summary

An evaluation and excavation on the site of the former village hall revealed evidence of Early or Middle Saxon to Late Saxon occupation and trade. Four prehistoric flints were also recovered, two of which may be Mesolithic or Early Neolithic.

Full description

Archaeological work prior to redevelopment of former village hall site.

9-10 October 2000. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of two evaluation trenches, one in each of the two proposed building plots. This work revealed evidence of Early Saxon/Middle Saxon to Late Saxon occupation and trade. A residual prehistoric flint of possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date was recovered.

19-25 October 2000. Excavation.
Topsoil stripped and footing trenches excavated. No further features were identified, although a number of additional finds were recovered. These finds included three prehistoric flints, one of which may also be Mesolithic or Early Neolithic in date.
