Full description

Winter 1999. Trial Trench.
Metanglia Site, Quaker Lane.
Archaeological features and deposits are present at the site, but dateable material lacking.
Probably mostly post-medieval, but some features may be medieval or earlier.
One Early Saxon/Middle Saxon sherd, may be residual.
The features recorded in the evaluation trench are probably associated with quarrying and/or occupation and later landscaping and gardening.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2018.311).
S. Underdown (NAU), 15 February 2001. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 April 2015 and 18 April 2019.

Newspaper article (S3) notes that an objection to this development was made in 1988 on the grounds that it contained a Quaker meeting house of around 1680 in use until 1800 after which it went through a variety of industrial uses. The conservation officer for North Norfolk stated at the time he could find no evidence to support this.
