Summary

Metal-detecting in 1997 identified two concentration of material in this field, one that may represent Late Saxon occupation and the other medieval. Finds recovered in this field between 1997 and 2012 include prehistoric flints, including a Palaeolithic/Mesolithic burin and an undatable core; Roman, Late Saxon; medieval and post-medieval pottery; part of a lava quern; a Roman coin and Late Iron Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Late Iron Age/early Roman brooch; a Roman plate brooch and a stud; two Early Saxon brooches; a Late Saxon stirrup mount; medieval brooches, dress accessories, a knife end-cap, a mirror and lead pot mends; medieval/post-medieval cauldron fragments and an iron horseshoe and post-medieval dress accessories. Other notable finds include a ?medieval stone mortar.

October 1997. Metal-detecting.
Finds predominantly from two areas. Finds from area centred at [1]:
1 Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic burin. See drawing (S1). Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1998.306). This find is listed in (S2) and also noted in (S3).
1 undatable prehistoric flint core.
1 Roman coin.
1 Roman pottery sherd.
1 Early Saxon small-long brooch (S4).
1 Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery sherd.
2 medieval coins.
18 medieval metal objects, including 3 annular brooches - one silver gilt (S5), 10 buckles, 2 belt fittings, 1 knife end cap, 1 ?ornamental mount, 1 vessel rim
35 medieval pottery sherds, including many large, fresh sherds. 2 unglazed, 1 glazed, 31 glazed Grimston ware, 1 late medieval/transitional.
2 ?medieval lead pot-mends.
1 ?medieval stone (coarse limestone) mortar
3 medieval/post-medieval metal objects including 1 buckle frame, 1 iron rowel spur, 1 iron horse shoe.
1 post-medieval lead alloy button.
1 post-medieval Dutch red earthenware pottery sherd.
1 undatable lava quern fragment.

1 Early Saxon cruciform brooch (S6).
8 Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery sherds.

December 1997. Metal detecting.
Stirrup angle mount, with ?solder (but no iron corrosion) on reverse. In shape of an animal (?a horse) it is very corroded and only a few details can be made out. At top there seems to have been a zone of ribbing; below this are ears, eyes in a prominent ridge, and a long nose with a groove between the two nostrils.
Anglo-Scandinavian, Late Saxon, 11th century. See (S8) and (S9).

Both halves of a 13th/15th century mirror, corroded shut. Most of surfaces missing, but decoration of double rows of triangular punch marks just visible. Hinge lugs held together by bronze bar, the lugs opposite are not secured. Diam. 30mm.
