Summary

An 18th century terrace of red brick cottages marked as a workhouse on Faden's map of 1797. The cottages have a central two-bay pediment and a rear wing with stepped gables. The workhouse was divided into male and female sections and is an important example of a workhouse created as a result of 'Gilbert's Act'.

Full description

Workhouse on (S1).
Now 19-21 Nursery Cottages (and since then, Intwood House).
18th century red brick, 2 storeys, 6 bays single storey 2 bay extentions. Pedimented centre above narrower windows (2 bays). Stepped gables and end stacks. Rear wing with stepped gable.

(S3) dates the building to about 1783 and notes it was divided into separate male and female sections, with 2 staircases; there is a squint from the rear wing into the west stair.
Important example of a 'Gilbert Act' workhouse.
