Summary

A medieval moat survives as earthworks and appears on Ordnance Survey maps. It is called 'Woolterton Manor' in 18th century documents. A prehistoric flint flake, Roman spindle whorl, medieval pottery and a 16th century German jetton have been found here.

Full description

Moat 200m southeast of Manor Farm.
Moat shown on 6in Ordnance Survey map (S1) as very roughly rectangular with west and south side wet, and north and east sides irregular and dry with channel running east.

October 1979.
Planted over with close set young pine trees. This and pheasants prevented close inspection.

Also from island.
Thirty-seven medieval unglazed sherds and ten glazed Grimston, of which only one is likely to be 15th century.

1985. Field survey
Survey (S2; copy in file) and notes in (S3), suggest that trees removed, or had only formed a screen around the outside. Stated to be referred to in terrier of 1767 quoting state papers of 1640 as site of Woolterton Manor.
Sherds from platform concentrated on high south edge; eleven green and brown glazed Grimston 13th to 15th century, forty-nine unglazed cooking pot, bowl and jar sherds 13th to 14th century.
