Record Details

NHER Number:3174
Type of record:Monument
Name:Sharrington medieval stone cross

Summary

A medieval stone cross, much restored, but probably in its original position. The cross is on, or close to, the route from east Norfolk to Binham Priory and the medieval shrine at Walsingham, and it is possible that it was erected as a preaching station for pilgrims.

Full description

Cross.
13 November 1979. Visit. Base once had stop angles; hole in centre of each side as if once had plaques attached (was it used as a signpost?) Base of shaft square, chamfered to round. Next section above this does not belong but is obviously old; it is of a softer stone and full of holes, and may be a section of another cross, re-used then rescued and used to restore this one. The upper sections and mace-like top are recent. (S1) and press cutting (S2) in file.
E. Rose (NAU).
