Name:Mattishall Roman coin hoard

Summary

A hoard of 1100 Roman silver coins in a pot was found by shovelling at the side of a driveway to a new bungalow site. The pot had been buried in a shallow pit. There was no evidence of nearby buildings or other Roman activity. The coins were minted during the reigns of the emperors from Antoninus Pius to Postumus.

Full description

January 1968. Found by shovelling at side of new driveway to bungalow site.
Hoard of 1100 Roman silver coins in pot.
Treasure Trove Inquest 12 February at Dereham.
Pot buried in shallow pit, perhaps covered by large sherd miscellaneous other Roman sherds in pit no traces of domestic rubbish nor of contemporary building.
Range of hoard: Antoninus Pius to Postumus.

Footings and service trenches watched at irregular intervals, so not all trench sections and spoil were thoroughly examined. No finds.
