NHER Number:30636
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Roman to medieval settlement and multi-period finds, including a possible Bronze Age hoard

Summary

Extensive metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1994 and 2017 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a Neolithic part-polished axehead and knife or sickle blade; Iron Age to post-medieval pottery sherds; an undated fragment of lava quern; Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and tokens and Early Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Early/Middle Bronze Age dirk or dagger; a Bronze Age awl; an ?Iron Age possible terret; Roman brooches, key fragments, a buckle, furniture stud and finger ring; Early Saxon brooches, girdle hangers, buckles and a wrist clasp; Middle Saxon strap-ends, pins and a brooch; a Middle/Late Saxon brooch, hooked tag and strap-end; Late Saxon brooches, bridal cheek pieces, strap-ends, a finger ring and bell; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories; medieval brooches, sword scabbard chapes, keys, harness pendants, a bridle fragment, leash swivel fragment, swivelling harness hook, papal bulla, purse bar terminal, thimble, possible lead weight, seal matrix and box/casket binding strip; medieval/post-medieval spur fragments and a possible harness mount; a post-medieval cloth seal and a coin weight.
The many Bronze Age metal items recovered suggests that this may be the site of a hoard which has been scattered by ploughing. The large number of Roman coins, brooches and other metalwork are evidence for Roman settlement at this spot. Excitingly the presence of a large number of Early, Middle and Late Saxon and medieval metal objects is evidence for the continuity of that settlement right through until occupation appears to decrease in the post-medieval period. The settlement may have extended into the adjacent field (NHER 30984).
