Summary

Metal-detecting in 1993 and 2002-2003 recovered Roman and Middle Saxon to post-medieval metal objects including a medieval coin and the unusual find of a 15th century Billon Sesino coin of Filipo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. Other metal finds include a Roman brooch; Middle Saxon and Late Saxon hooked tags; medieval buckles, a brooch, harness pendant and a strap fitting and a post-medieval buckle and part of a knife.

Full description

August 1993. Metal detecting finds.

Lovely 14th to 15th century quatrefoil harness pendant with cast low relief elaborate trefoil on an enamelled ground. Traces of gilding. Suspension loop partly broken. See (S2).
Roman plate brooch. Lozenge type 2nd century with circular lugs on side tips and bell shaped lugs at top and bottom. Two vertical lines decorate central panel. Complete and in very fresh condition. See (S2).

A Billon Sesino of Filipo Maria Visconti, duke of Milan (1412 to 1447). The Duke's name is visible on the obverse (around the cross), and the reverse has a half length figure of St Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, raising his arms. A few coins of Milan have been recorded in 15th century contexts, but this is an unusual find.
