Name:Multi-period finds and Roman silver coin hoard

Summary

Fieldwalking in advance of the Brockdish to Needham bypass recovered prehistoric flint flakes, part of a Roman coin hoard and medieval pieces of pot. Later metal detecting recovered more of the hoard and also Iron Age, medieval and post medieval coins. The hoard contained at least twenty nine silver denarii dated to 109 BC to 64 AD.

October 1992-December 1993. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
A143 Brockdish-Needham Bypass.
Field survey on proposed route of bypass (Field 3837):
8 prehistoric flint flakes, 1 core and 1 blade.
1 Roman coin (at [1]; Context 1) comprising early Roman coins.
3 medieval pottery sherds.

1993-1994. Further metal-detecting.
Additional metal-detecting in late 1993, followed by an extensive search after ploughing in mid 1994.
Finds of other Roman coins, also Iron Age, medieval and post medieval coins.
These finds suggest that the Roman coins recovered to date represent a scattered hoard.

September 1994. Watching Brief.
A143 Brockdish-Needham Bypass.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping in vicinity of hoard findspot.
An undated gully was the only archaeologically significant feature identified.
Finds recovered included:
1 prehistoric flint flake.
2 additional Roman coins.
1 post-medieval button and other, modern objects that were discarded.

Twenty one more coins from the hoard found by [1] were declared Treasure Trove December 1995.
